Happy New Year! 09 is here, and to start things off big, there are two updates today.

1: Gleaming Scythe is now on Deviant Art. We'll be posting, and coordinating with our artists who use Deviant Art, to bring you images and art prior to The Black Paw website going up. There will be pieces by Cyril Van Der Haegen, Matt Frank, and Robekka Art Studios. Here's a direct -Link-

2: Next, here's a glimpse at the nature of The Gleaming Scythe character design process. Not all characters go through this three step process, but the majority do. In the below example, the "in-between" artist was Christina Vincent, but Oray Art Studios also did a large majority of the early concept images. These images are of Shriker; Leader of The Black Paw. For more information on him, see this -post-

On the far left is the original drawing of Shriker done by The Black Paw writer, Usen Wareagle. The center image is the slightly modified, and better rendered re-imagining as done by Christina Vincent, and the image on the right side is the Final character design by Robekka Art Studios.

Hope everyone's been enjoying the holidays! The subject of today's Blog? The Gleaming Scythe Logo/Mascot. She was first seen in the last Blog post on The Gleaming Scythe holiday card. As was mentioned in that blog, she was designed by artist Cyril Van Der Haegen. Here are some initial concept sketches done by Cyril:

The decision was made to go with the center image design, so work began on a more final version. There was a bit of uncertainty as to what color she should be though, as elves come in all sorts of colors in the existing lore. This led to a literal rainbow of mascots:

The original idea called for her to be a Dark Elf. But that didn't narrow the field much. In some lore, Dark Elves are literally dark. Brown, or black, or even a charcoal color. In EverQuest they're a dark blue, and in World of Warcraft, they're purple.. Given all the variations of Dark Elves, it was decided it'd be easier to just have her be a normal elf, and the flesh color was chosen. Here's the final design, with accompanying text:

Cyril usually draws her, but Robekka Artist Xin also drew a version of the logo for the website:

So where will she turn up next? Who knows? There will be more artwork of her in the future, as the character has rapidly taken on a life of her own around here.

Happy Holidays! What a time of year to debut a new site! I'll be updating The Gleaming Scythe Blog every Tuesday and Saturday, with the latest information and happenings. This will be the best place to get the most up to date information on whatever Gleaming Scythe's doing, and the progression of it's titles. For this post, here's The Gleaming Scythe 2008 Christmas Card. It was made entirely by Cyril Van Der Haegen of Tegehel.org. Cyril's a real professional when it comes to art, and the elf character is one we've worked on before, so Cyril was able to put this one together in under a week, while sick, with the only real instructions being to make a Holiday Card featuring The Elven Mascot. This's what he put together:

Happy Holidays everyone!
